Five Ways to Stay Active Outside of the Gym
There's no one way to be healthy but one thing I've found that helps me feel the happiest and healthiest is activity throughout the day and week, not just an hour in the gym and then the rest of the night on the couch.
I'm extremely lucky to live in a city where everything is walkable, and most things (like grocery stores) have to be walked to. Here are some of my favorite ways to stay active outside of the gym.
1) Walk it out
I love love love going for walks. I live right next to Lincoln Park so I can walk through the park or walk to the water front trail or explore my neighborhood a bit. I'm definitely soaking up the last bit of good days before Chicago winter hits in a few months.
2) Try a new sport
Shoot some hoops, play some tennis, go to a driving range, try rock climbing-- anything that can challenge your mind and muscles while still providing a fun experience is a win-win.
3) Pop, Lock and Drop it
Whether its out at the club or in your own bedroom, play your favorite song and bust a move. I'm a big advocate of a good dance session for your daily calorie burn.
4) Just keep swimming
I'm grateful to have an indoor pool at my apartment, and I know that this may not be possible for everyone, but if you can go swimming, I highly recommend it for a kick-butt workout outside of the gym. (I do this for an arm workout about once a week! It's great for the shoulders and arms.)
5) Stretch
I try and do yoga at least once a day for about 20 minutes. It's such a good way to check in with your body, learn to listen to it and come to peace with your day. Aim to add a few minutes of yoga onto your gym session or incorporate it into your nightly routine.
