How to Make a Routine
Morning routine, night routine - I’m sure you’ve heard about routines. I love routines. I like knowing exactly what I’m doing every day and having a plan. In terms of fitness, it helps me stay disciplined on my goals - that also includes my career, as well.
So how do you make a routine? Here’s how I set routines.
1) Have a goal
Are you looking to make a routine to be healthier? More productive? Find why you’re making a routine. With anything in life, having a why will help you stay motivated and stick to your routine.
2) Write down what helps you get to that goal
Every time I’m changing my routine, I’ll make a list of things that help me get to my goal. Take for example I want to be a bit healthier. I make a list of things like working out, drinking water, eating veggies, etc. From there, I find ways to incorporate those things into my daily schedule. For example, I wanted to be a bit healthier and walking was one of my items. I don’t have enough time in the mornings for a walk and after work it can get crammed with going to the gym, so I found a little time during lunch to do a walk.
3) Just do it
The easiest way to start a routine is just do it. Once you have your list of tasks, wake up and do it. Don’t overanalyze or plan too much - at the end of the day, a routine will never work until you do it. Remember - it takes about 3 weeks to make a habit so stick to your routine for 3 weeks.
4) Evaluate and be flexible
The best plans are flexible. Allow yourself some wiggle room to figure out what works best and how those tasks you wrote down fit into your life. See how you’re feeling. See if you’re straining to fit something in or if something just naturally flows.
